Activehybrid 5 and m5 join expanding lineup. introductionrecently redesigned, the bmw 5 series gets two new models for 2013: the bmw activehybrid 5 and the high-performance bmw m5. Then there is the bmw 535i sedan, with the sweet 300-hp turbocharged inline-6; and the 550i sedan, with a whumping 445-hp v8. Each is available with xdrive all-wheel drive. the 2013 bmw activehybrid 5 combines the turbocharged 6-cylinder with a 54-horsepower electric motor to make an impressive combined 335 horsepower and deliver an unimpressive 23/30 city/highway miles per gallon epa rating. The electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery in the trunk. the 2013 bmw m5 features a 560-horsepower v8. The 2013 m5 is available with a 6-speed manual transmission or 7-speed double-clutch paddle-shifting transmission. The new m5 is ready for the track, but we found that for anything more than a handful of laps it needs ceramic brake rotors, which are expected to be an option for the 2014 model. the 2013 bmw 550i gets a big bump in power. Bmw's 2. 0-liter turbocharged engine rivals audi's 2. 0-liter turbo. all three bmw 5 series sedans are chic, crisp and distinguished for their aggressive styling and driving character. The 2013 models get further streamlining and simplification to the navigation and infotainment programs. Other than that, 2013 changes to the 5 series are all to the option packages. the modular bmw interior is handsome and contemporary. Glowing tan and matte-black contrast handsomely on the dashboard, these surfaces punctuated by elegant swatches of exotic wood. Instrumentation is comprehensive and flawless. Gauges are about perfect to look at and read. Those who see themselves as having reached a certain level of luxury should be satisfied in this stylish cabin. Those whose standards of ergonomics and efficiency are high, might find compromised areas. with minimal frontal overhang and muscular flanks that seem shaped by this car's dynamic forward thrust, the 5 series never quite looks at rest. But driving excitement has always been bmw's stock in trade. Even the activehybrid 5 is powerful, accelerating from zero to 60 in 5. 7 seconds. Their over-the-road qualities, or at least the promise of them, are surely what motivate many bmw aspirants. New options for 2013 include the bang & olufsen sound system 4500), and rear seat entertainment system 2200). the 535i comes standard with dakota leather. safety equipment that comes standard on all 5 series includes two-stage front airbags, side-impact airbags and curtain front-to-rear head protection, active head restraints, latch child seat mounts, three-point seatbelts with force limiters and front-seat emergency pre-tensioners. optional safety equipment includes a rearview camera with wide-angle view and tracking line; also a top view shows a full picture of vehicle surroundings; and side view monitors side traffic as viewed from front bumpers. Active cruise control adjusts speed to maintain safe interval to car ahead, with provision to stop the vehicle completely if required; collision warning indicates an imminent collision, primes the brakes for full stopping power, and will automatically apply the brakes. Active blind spot detection monitors safe lane reentry when overtaking another car; a visual signal and a recognizable vibration in the steering wheel provide further warning. Lane departure warning monitors lane markers; when a lane change begins and turn signals are not activated, the system warns the driver with vibration in the steering wheel. Automated headlights follow curves in winding roads, and automated high-beam controls switch high beams on and off as required when drawing close to another car or meeting oncoming cars up to 440 yards ahead. Adaptive brake light system flashes bright taillights when abs is engaged or brakes are applied strongly. Night vision with pedestrian detection provides early detection of objects and pedestrians in the night; warning is provided by the control display and is displayed on the inner surface of the windshield if equipped with head-up display. Head-up display delivers vehicle speed and other data without requiring a glance away from the road ahead. walkaroundthe outward appearance of the 5 series is unmistakably bmw. It has no extraneous horizontal surfaces as pre-2011 bmws had, adhering instead to the functional appeal that has long been bmw's signature. The traditional kidney grille is present, and the short front overhang, a bmw trademark, is accompanied by a traditional long hood and long, segment-leading 116. 9-inch wheelbase. the hood on the gran turismo coupe models is even longer, and their wheelbase is 120. 7 inches. the 5 series sedan cabin is set considerably to the rear, giving the sedan profile a slightly wedged, coupe-like forward-thrust shape that, given the car's performance, is in no way misleading. The signature kink in the rear side window's aft edge confirms that this is a bona fide bmw. at the nose, the 5 series features bmw adaptive xenon headlights for powerful, safe forward illumination. And in daytime running, the headlight complex is illuminated by led rings of light. The turn indicators, as well, are illuminated by led. Taillight clusters are illuminated in an led pattern distinctive to bmw. interiorthe cockpit of the bmw 5 series defers to the driver. The dashboard is angled slightly toward the. The base price gap between x1 and x3 is about $8,000, but the x3 comes standard with all-wheel drive, whereas the base x1 sdrive28i is rear-wheel drive. (the 2013 bmw x3 xdrive28i starts at $38,850 msrp, while a 2013 bmw x3 xdrive28i retails for $32,350.) this is not an economic chasm. Even equipped with all-wheel drive, the x1 weighs about 300 pounds lighter, and it delivers a decisive 5 mpg edge in epa highway fuel economy ratings. commonality with the 1 series continues under the x1's hood, with two engine options, both turbocharged. Fuel economy is an epa-estimated 24/34 mpg city/highway. Bmw says it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6. 2 seconds. the upgrade is the smooth and potent 3. 0-liter twin turbo six-cylinder, used by the bmw x1 xdrive35i and rated at 300 horsepower at 5800 rpm, 300 pound-feet of torque at 1300-5000 rpm. It's epa-rated at 18/27 mpg city/highway. The bmw sdrive28i is rear-wheel drive. like the other bmw suvs, the x1 has no off-road pretensions whatsoever; ground clearance is a sedan-like 7. 0 inches, and all-wheel drive is conceived here as a traction and stability enhancer for driving on low adhesion surfaces or in inclement weather conditions or both. styling doesn't seem to be a particularly risky business for bmw, at least as it affects the x5, the x3, and the x1. Having established a look with the x5, its first-ever suv, bmw simply reduced the scale, then reduced it again. In fact, it's not easy to distinguish x1 from x3 unless the two are parked side by side. the other element of ongoing bmw appeal is a blend of ride and handling that's become a dynamic benchmark for the rest of the industry. Sharing the 1 series sedan foundations, the bmw x1 hews true to this ethic. Inevitably, it's not quite as agile as the 3 series sedan or wagon. Heftier curb weights and a high profile dilute the athletic index slightly. The sedans were completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, and the 3 series lineup is now in its sixth generation. the 2014 bmw 3 series gran turismo is larger and roomier than the previous-generation version and is available in all-wheel-drive bmw 328i xdrive and bmw 335i xdrive variants. The diesel-powered bmw 328d sedan comes with the standard rear-wheel drive or xdrive all-wheel drive. All bmw 328d sports wagons come with xdrive all-wheel drive. as is typical with diesel power, fuel economy is admirable in the bmw 328d sedan and wagon. Rear-wheel-drive 328d sedans are epa-rated 32/45 mpg city/highway, and the 328d xdrive sedan and wagon are rated 31/43 mpg city/highway. also new for 2014 is bmw assist ecall, an emergency crash notification system, as standard equipment on all its 3 series models, along with 10 years of service. Previously, the ecall services were only available when bundled with certain optional packages. the 3 series coupe and convertible have been discontinued for 2014, and are replaced by the all-new bmw 4 series. A new high-performance m3 is scheduled to reappear later for 2014, after taking a hiatus for one model year. The 2014 bmw 320i earns an epa-estimated 23/36 mpg city/highway with the 6-speed manual transmission and 24/36 mpg city/highway with the automatic. All-wheel-drive bmw 320i xdrive models are automatic-only and achieve 23/35 mpg city/highway. This version accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5. 9 seconds with 8-speed automatic or in just 5. 7 seconds with 6-speed manual. The same feat takes the audi a4 2. 0t 6. 5 seconds. The bmw 328i achieves an epa-estimated 22/35 mpg city/highway with the 6-speed manual, and 23/33 mpg city/highway with the automatic on both rwd and awd models. most powerful is the bmw 335i, with a turbocharged 3. 0-liter inline-6 that makes 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy estimates are just 20/30 mpg city/highway with 6-speed manual, but an impressive 23/33 mpg with the 8-speed automatic. Considering the near-$15,000 price premium, we recommend the 328i or new 328d for the best combination of performance and frugality. Activehybrid3 may beat them in terms of emissions, however. the 2014 bmw 3 series sedan remains the benchmark among luxury sport compact cars such as the mercedes-benz c-class, audi a4, and lexus is. The bmw 328i xdrive sports wagon is most closely matched by the audi allroad.
